Psychiatry

What is the role of the OT in Psychiatry?

When dealing with psychiatric conditions we aim to equip our patients with practical, realistic life skills. Prior to beginning therapy we will perform a screening assessment and from this the OT works with the patient to identify the key areas of focus and therapeutic goals.

Psychiatric conditions treated include:
  • Depression
  • Bipolar mood disorders
  • Schizophrenia
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Dementia
  • Substance abuse

Our therapy extends to patients who require specific skills training, or those who would benefit from in depth life skills. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Stress management
  • Coping skills
  • Anxiety management
  • Budgeting skills
  • Goal setting
  • Self esteem
  • Problem solving
  • Communication skills
  • Assertiveness training
  • Work coping skills
  • Balanced lifestyle planning
